A Year of Design at 19 Sound
The past 12 months have been great for 19 Sound. So many projects have come its way, and the team had a great time composing and designing sound for such a variety of great commercial content. As much as this is at the core of what it does, it’s great when a project comes its way that changes perspectives on things.
19 Sound explains some of its recent projects and how sound can change experiences.
Through the wonderful people at INCA productions and the visionary work of James Stopforth and The Unseen we’ve been able to spread our wings in the world of installation sound design, immersive audio, and publicly interactive experiences.
INCA are a strategic, creative events agency specialising in luxury, lifestyle, art & culture, fashion, and tech. They approached us with a brief, on behalf of Harrods, who were hosting an event there, to fill the iconic banqueting house with the sound of nature. They wanted three distinctive areas that would immerse guests into thinking the outside had come in.
Think trees blowing in the wind, leaves rustling at your feet, animals scurrying around in the undergrowth.
Then moving into flowing river water, frogs ribbiting, babbling brooks. Then without warning an immense thunder storm was to fill the entire building, rain pouring in, lightning cutting through the calm.
Using the lightning as a cue, guests would then make their way into the banqueting hall itself, where the air was filled with the sound of cicadas, owls and a gentle breeze.
A still summer evening was the backdrop for their meal.
Working closely with the AV team onsite Will was able to walk through the space and mix the soundscapes in real time.
A sample of the soundscape created can be heard below:
We continued our work with INCA on another project, this time for the iconic private members club, Annabels on Berkeley Square.
The theme; Halloween, all out gore, with inspiration taken from Game Of Thrones. Will created a soundscape that filled corridors with stereo panned medieval battles, horses racing past from left to right, spiral staircases swirling with bats and guttural screams.
There were rooms where hidden monsters were ripping away at flesh and snarling with intent.
INCA also commissioned a visual artist to create scenes of dragons creating havoc and destruction. This was to be played on a giant screen when guests arrived at the event. 19 Sound were tasked with creating the sound design and mixing for this sequence. Being a huge GOT this brought out our inner geek, so Will particularly enjoyed designing the sounds for this sequence, a sample of which can be heard below.
Spring Rites by Flora Starky:
James Stopforth is a photographer/director that we have worked with over many years, on projects for Puma, Dazed & Confused, Red Thread Journal among others. This however was a different project altogether. The client was Flora Starkey, aka florist to the stars with strong links to a certain Beatle. Her and her team had commissioned James to create a film that would capture the beauty of her flowers. The film was to be played publicly on a 3D screen in St Christophers Place, just off Oxford St.
Our job was to create a soundscape/composition that would compliment this film and translate to the open space where it would be played.
James referenced Aphex Twins '#3' from his seminal ‘Selected Ambient Works Volume II’ album, as a starting point for us to work from. As this was an in house favourite already, we were more than ready to go, and the composition process was very straightforward and natural. A densely constructed, cyclical, ambient piece emerged drenched in reverbs which complimented the slow, hypnotic pace of the film.
All in all these projects have been a great experience for 19 Sound - broadening the scope of what we do, getting the sound out of the computers and developing projects that work in real spaces.
But it doesn't end there…
For our next collaborative soundscape / installation project, 19 Sound are currently working with internationally renowned photographer Arved Gintenreiter.
All to be revealed on this soon.
