The World of Virtual Reality Meets Up at VRLO

The world of virtual reality met up at VRLO in December at Amber Hotel in Marble Arch, London. VRLO, in association with REWIND, featured a number of inspiring speakers from the virtual reality sector, alongside VR demos and technology.

The first VRLO event launched on 15 July 2015. REWIND wanted to create a premium tech event centred around virtual reality; one that could bring together developers, creators, investors and enthusiasts to talk, share and test some of the most cutting edge products in the industry. "There had been a lot of demand for such an event but nothing existed, so we decided that instead of complaining about the lack of dedicated community inclusive VR showcases we’d host one ourselves!" says Sol Rogers, managing director and founder of REWIND. 

VRLO offers attendees a first class ticket into the world of virtual reality, and one of the biggest draws is that they can preview some of the latest and most exciting VR products, both hardware and content. "The industry is moving so fast that we’re able to have different exhibitors each time, which keeps the event feeling fresh, current and exciting. HMDs, peripherals and new software advances, we’re able to bring them to the people before they’ve even touched the shelves," says Rogers. 

'We hosted several presentations from industry leading companies such as Samsung, Google, Epic Games, Bossa Studios and Autodesk, with the main focus being the future of VR across a variety of platforms. We do try to keep all talks short as we want to keep the focus on networking and getting hands on with the tech.'

REWIND is currently in the early planning stages for a spring event, which will host another group of exciting creatives giving presentations and demonstrations of their newest VR projects and products. 'We’re also hoping to do a larger summer event – a VR Expo of sorts – to introduce virtual reality to as many people as possible alongside bringing together industry experts and innovators,' continues Rogers. 

How can retailers benefit from offering in-store virtual reality experiences?

"Whilst VR will leave its mark on nearly every industry, retail is a sector that can make enormous gains from this new technology. For some customers, the story behind a product can be almost as important as the product itself. VR allows brands to bring immersive storytelling in-store in a way that hasn't been possible until now. For example, a customer could be transported to a brand’s showroom on the other side of the world to learn more about the production process and meet the people creating the item. VR will enable retailers and brand to connect more deeply with their customers, which in turn will drive loyalty and ultimately sales.

"VR will diminish the need for big costly physical spaces to showcase entire ranges, instead items -  from shoes to furniture - can be tested virtually by simply putting on a VR headset.  Retailers will also be able to help customers visualise, for example, furniture in the context of the home. They’ll be able to mix and match pieces from different collections, change colours and fabrics - a unique sales tool which will make the decision making and buying process easier for the consumer.

"VR enables custom made experiences that address the individual needs and preferences of the customer, providing retailers large and small with a way to strengthen relationships with existing customers and reach new ones anywhere in the world.

"One of the most exciting aspects of VR is the limitless possibilities, brands and outlets really are only constrained by their imaginations, and budget. VR presents the perfect opportunity to create a very new and very real type of shopping experience," says Rogers.
