New York-based production company INTERSTATE today unveiled the film it created for premium audio company Master & Dynamic, a visually intriguing spot that chronicles the elegant design and construction of the brand’s flagship MH40 over ear headphones. The spot transforms a manufacturing story into a visual poem filled with molten metal, flowing liquids and magnetized metal shavings transforming into headphone components, each a piece of engineered wonder.

To put the spotlight on the craft and engineering involved in making the MH40, INTERSTATE contrasted the brutal raw qualities of the headphone’s materials with the elegance and refinement of its manufacturing process.

“This spot is both a celebration of the raw materials that go into the MH40 headphones and a story about the fascinating way the materials interact with each other and inform the design of the product,” said Yann Mabille, co-director. “To create the finished look, we captured as much as we could in camera, shooting with a birds-eye view and a mix of stop motion and VFX.”

With meticulous and careful attention to detail in each shot, INTERSTATE created a series of memorable aesthetic moments. For example, in the liquid aluminum sequence INTERSTATE used an incredible material called Gallium for the melting aluminum effect (Gallium was used in the original Terminator movies), and cast and melted an aluminum ingot from it on camera. “The material melts at roughly 80º Fahrenheit,” said INTERSTATE Executive Producer Danny Rosenbloom. “It’s the same stuff some magicians use to bend spoons with their minds – not all of them of course, because the good ones really can bend spoons with their minds.”

“The MH40 is a high-end luxury product,” added co-director Adam Levite. “The sonic elements were also incredibly important, and another way of enhancing and illustrating the qualities of the materials. Montreal-based BLVD provided a rich, subtle sonic tapestry underneath the beautiful visuals, small details and dynamics that reward viewers who listen to the spot on their Master & Dynamic headphones.”
