Creativity Has Nothing to Do With Innovation

I met Allan Ryan (innovation expert, founder and executive director of Hargraves Institute) this week on the premise that he was quoted as saying that "creativity has nothing to do with innovation".

Allan was misquoted. However if not for that we wouldn't have met. If we hadn't have met I would not have had the privilege of being asked questions by someone I now hope to develop a mentorship with. This is because Allan understands creativity. He understands that novelty spawns from asking the right questions. Creativity is not the answer, it's the question.

My perspective on business was forged on the rugby union fields. The All Blacks don't win because they know how to answer the game. They win because they know what questions to ask. "Have you got what it takes to break through our line"?

The only teams that have ever beaten the All Blacks in my memory are those teams that didn't question themselves they questioned the All Blacks. They asked, "Have you got what it takes to break our line"? and whilst the All Blacks were thinking they were scoring.

Trust your self. It's the only way to find your creativity.
